2012 – 2013 Season Competition Winner
Matthew Frazier | Cello
Matthew Frazier is a junior at Badger High School in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. He is principal cellist with the Badger High School Bach Group and the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra. He is in his fifth year participating in Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra programs, where he is a member of the Senior Symphony. He performs in a string quartet with other accomplished high school students at Midwest Young Artists in Lake Forest, Illinois. This quartet was recently invited to the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition at Notre Dame University.
Matthew began Suzuki violin lessons at age three and piano at age five. As a thoughtful eight year old, he decided to take up the cello. Since fourth grade, he has participated in the orchestra program in the Lake Geneva public schools. He studied privately with Loni Gornick and Cincy You, and is now a student of Benjamin Whitcomb of the UW Whitewater.
In 2011-12 Matthew played in the flagship orchestra of the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra program. He was principal cellist in the high school level Wisconsin School Music Association State Honors Orchestra in 2012. At Birch Creek Music Center summer camp in 2012 in Door County, Wisconsin, Matthew and other students performed six concerts of challenging symphony orchestra music in two weeks, alongside their professional teachers and coaches.
Matthew is the 2012 first place winner of the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Concerto Competition.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Matthew is an honor roll student and has competed on the Badger High School soccer, downhill skiing, and sailboat racing teams.
